What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a court similar to a badminton court, with a low net like tennis, and paddles made of wood or composite materials. The rules are simple, and the game is suitable for all ages and skill levels, making it a perfect activity for families and groups of friends.

Origin of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three fathers looking for a fun activity for their children. The name of the game comes from the “Pickle Boat” in rowing, where the crew is made up of rowers from different teams. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity and is played on thousands of courts around the world.

Rules of Pickleball

  1. Game and Scoring: Pickleball is generally played in doubles, although it can also be played in singles. The game is won by reaching 11 points, with a minimum two-point advantage.
  2. Serve: The serve is made diagonally and must be hit below the waist.
  3. Volley: Volley shots must be made outside the non-volley zone, also known as “the kitchen.”
  4. Non-Volley Zone: This is the seven-foot area adjacent to the net on both sides. Players cannot volley the ball within this zone.
  5. Scoring: Only the serving team can score points.
